Clauses - Independent & Subordinate (Dependent)

Complete this assignment and submit it using either the Wiki Message or an email attachment.

An incomplete sentence, or SENTENCE FRAGMENT, is often a subordinate clause. It looks like a sentence and has a subject and a verb, but it doesn't state a complete thought.
An INDEPENDENT CLAUSE is a complete sentence.
A SUBORDINATE CLAUSE is merely an independent clause with a SUBORDINATOR on the front of it.

Some common subordinators are: when, because, then, as if, while, since

First, label each subject and verb in the following sentences.
Then, convert each of the independent clauses to a sentence fragment by inserting a subordinator.
Finally, create a title out of the sentence by leaving out words and/or rearranging the words.

Example: She (S) is helping (V) at home. (Sentence)
When she is helping at home (Fragment)
Helping at home (Title)

1- Grandpa(S) knew(V) the man.(Sentence)
As if grandpa knew the man.(Fragment)
The Man Grandpa Knew (Title)

2- The television(S) is(V) on the table.(Sentence)
While the T.V. was on the table.(Fragment)
The T.V. On the Table (Title)

3- The earth(S) goes(V) around the sun.(Sentence)
When the earth goes around the sun.(Fragment)
The Earth Around the Sun (Title)

4- I(S) decided to move(V) to Toronto.(Sentence)
Since I decided to move to Toronto.(Fragment)
Moving to Toronto (Title)

5- The job(S) opportunities were(V) limited.(Sentence)
Because the job opportunities were limited.(Fragment)
Job opportunities Limited (Title)

The correction for a sentence fragment, such as the ones that you created above, is to add an independent clause, after or before the fragment, to complete it.

Add an independent clause to each of the fragments that you created
above to make each a complete thought.

Label the subject and verb in each of the clauses.

Be prepared to explain why your work is a complete sentence.

Examples: When she (S) is helping (V) at home, the work (S) is finished (V) sooner.

The work (S) is finished (V) sooner, when she (S) is helping (V) at home.

1- As if grandpa(S) knew(V) the man, grandpa(S) yelled(V) at him.

2- While the television(S) is(V) on the table, I(S) am watching(V) it.

3- When the earth(S) goes(V) around the sun, I(S) can not feel it move(V).

4- Since I(S) decided to move(V) to Toronto, I(S) can get(V) a job.

5- Becaues the job(S) opportunities were(V) limited,people(S) can't get(V) good jobs.
